VITAL BELT, a wearable health monitor designed as a belt

D.O.N Co. Ltd., headquartered in Nagoya, Japan, has introduced VITAL BELT, an abdominal belt-type sensing wearable developed under its inner-down specialist brand TAION. Designed to be worn like an everyday belt, the device brings health monitoring into daily life without requiring direct skin contact or special effort from the user.

Built on years of apparel development and sensing research, VITAL BELT reflects TAION’s broader interest in how clothing can support well-being beyond warmth or comfort.

Why VITAL BELT was developed

As societies age, healthcare systems face growing pressure, and individuals are becoming more conscious of managing their health before problems appear. TAION’s team recognized a gap between medical devices and daily wearables. Many existing devices focus on wrists or fingers and often require frequent interaction or tight skin contact.

The waist emerged as a practical alternative. Subtle changes in breathing, posture, and movement can be detected around the abdomen, making it a useful location for continuous monitoring. This insight led to the concept of a belt that quietly tracks physical condition throughout the day.

How abdominal sensing works

VITAL BELT is the first wearable device to apply millimeter-wave sensing at the belt position. The technology allows the device to measure respiration, pulse-related movement, and body motion even when worn over clothing. No sensors need to touch the skin.

This approach makes it easier to capture data that is often missed by wrist-based devices, especially breathing patterns and postural shifts. Several patents have been secured for the sensor attachment method used in the belt.

What the data can reveal

By combining data from VITAL BELT with information from smartwatches or ring-type wearables, health analysis can become more detailed. Breathing rhythm, movement balance, and signs of physical stress can be observed together rather than in isolation.

The abdominal position also opens doors for future research. Areas under exploration include observation related to fetal activity, gut conditions, and approaches that gently raise deep body temperature through frequency-based methods. There is also interest in conditioning applications linked to the brain–gut connection, which could support both medical and wellness use cases over time.

Design and user experience

The belt is designed for everyday use. A neodymium magnet-based attachment system allows the buckle unit, which contains the sensing device, to be detached for charging. The belt itself can still be worn like a normal belt.

Users can also customize the belt section by changing materials or colors, making it possible to match different outfits or preferences. The goal is to keep the device practical, comfortable, and visually familiar.

The companion app

After authentication and calibration, the app adapts data collection to each user. It tracks breathing, pulse-related signals, sleep patterns, and movement, then turns that information into simple insights and recommendations.

Breathing-based applications range from yoga, meditation, and beauty-focused breathing to focus support, stress reduction, and emotion analysis for work settings. The system can also detect environmental conditions and body movement, allowing features such as stair-use detection for elderly users and real-time safety alerts.

Development status and early response

Prototype models and related solutions have already been presented in Japan, drawing interest from a wide range of companies. While challenges such as communication methods and noise processing remain, active development is underway.

The next steps include proof-of-concept testing, user trials, and test sales aimed at OEM partners. For corporate clients, TAION is also developing systems that allow employee health data to be managed in a centralized and privacy-conscious way.

VITAL BELT points toward a future where clothing plays a quiet role in monitoring health, much like an accessory that fits naturally into daily routines. By combining apparel design with sensing technology, TAION is exploring how wearables can feel less like devices and more like part of what people already wear.
