Fire-Dex introduces first PPE built specifically for fire investigators

Fire investigators have long operated in a space where traditional protective gear didn’t quite fit the job. Full structural turnouts often felt excessive, while lighter single-layer garments failed to offer enough protection. For years, there was no gear designed for the unique demands of post-fire investigations. Fire-Dex has now addressed that gap with the launch of its new Fire Investigation PPE — the first protective ensemble created specifically for fire investigators.

This patent-pending gear strikes a balance between protection, mobility, and breathability. It’s built to meet the real needs of investigators who spend long hours navigating hazardous, post-fire environments where heat, debris, and contamination risks remain high.

Designed with real-world feedback

Instead of adapting existing gear, Fire-Dex started from the ground up. The company worked closely with experienced fire investigators to understand what they actually need in the field. Investigators asked for gear that’s waterproof yet breathable, comfortable in the heat, and built with pockets and access points tailored to their tools.

The result is a purpose-built garment that moves easily, protects key areas, and reduces the risk of heat stress. It’s designed to stay light and comfortable even during long days at complex scenes.

Everything we design at Fire-Dex is designed to help first responders be at their best,” said Todd Herring, Vice President of Product Innovation and Strategy at Fire-Dex. “Being at your best means you’re protected but still free to do the work you need to do. We’ve always focused on fit, function, and material science, and this PPE reflects all of that to give fire investigators the gear they’ve been asking for.

Built for how investigators actually work

The Fire Investigation PPE includes several thoughtful features drawn directly from investigator feedback:

  • Targeted waterproofing that protects where it’s needed while maintaining ventilation in less critical areas.
  • Integrated knee pads to ease strain during long periods of kneeling and climbing.
  • Strategic venting panels, using the same patent-pending technology from Fire-Dex’s AeroFlex® turnouts, to improve airflow and reduce heat buildup while still blocking particulates.
  • Pass-through pockets for quick access to firearms, identification, and other essential tools.
  • A waterproof phone pocket for secure, convenient storage.

At the core of this gear is TECGEN51® fabric, Fire-Dex’s trusted PPE material known for its lightweight strength, durability, and breathability. TECGEN51® has been relied on by tens of thousands of first responders for nearly two decades and remains exclusive to Fire-Dex.

Meeting real hazards head-on

Every fire scene carries unpredictable risks — from sharp debris and wet ash to unstable structures and unseen contaminants. Fire-Dex designed this gear to reflect that reality. It aligns with current safety standards while addressing the practical demands of investigative work.

The Fire Investigation PPE also fits into Fire-Dex’s growing non-structural PPE lineup. When paired with Dex-Rescue Gloves, FDXL90 Boots, and particulate-blocking hoods, investigators can step into scenes with a fully integrated, lightweight ensemble that offers consistent protection from head to toe.

The new Fire Investigation PPE is now available for purchase through Fire-Dex distributors. Interested departments can request a quote to explore how this gear can make post-fire investigations safer and more efficient.
