Mahlo introduces Gravimax MMX-R to strengthen quality control in web production

Quality control in web-based production is becoming more complex. Materials are evolving, basis weights are less consistent, and manufacturers are expected to run efficient and transparent operations. In this environment, accurate measurement across the full web width is essential for stable production.
Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG has developed the Gravimax MMX-R sensor platform to meet these needs. The system uses radiometric X-ray technology combined with advanced signal processing to measure both basis weight and material composition. It also brings multiple measurement functions into one platform, reducing the need for different sensor systems.
Product Manager Matthias Wulbeck explains that the focus was on delivering precise results while ensuring the system remains practical for daily industrial use. The platform is modular, allowing users to select the right sensor configuration based on their material and process. It can handle applications ranging from ultra-light nonwovens to products with very high basis weights.
Different sensor types are available, including absorption, backscatter, and hybrid versions. This flexibility allows the system to replace older technologies such as beta-based solutions in many cases.
In industrial applications, the MMX-R platform has already shown reliable performance. For multilayer graphite nonwovens between 600 and 1,200 g/m², the backscatter sensor produces results similar to traditional Kr-85 systems, but without requiring a radioactive source. This reduces regulatory requirements and operating costs.
The system also works effectively on unconsolidated nonwovens measured over metallic surfaces. Lower tube voltage can be used, which simplifies radiation safety while maintaining accuracy. In hybrid mode, the sensor can measure total basis weight along with fiber and binder content, as well as loss on ignition. Even small variations in binder levels can be detected clearly.
The platform covers a wide measurement range, from very light materials to those exceeding 15,000 g/m². This makes it suitable for sectors such as hygiene, filtration, automotive textiles, construction, and composites.
Integration into existing production lines is straightforward. The system can be installed in both new and existing O-frame scanners, and features like enclosed radiation collectors help reduce exposure.
According to Sales Director Thomas Höpfl, reliable and usable data is key for manufacturers. The MMX-R platform provides real-time insights, helping detect process changes early and maintain consistent quality.
Mahlo will present the new system at Techtextil, where visitors can see how real-time data supports better production control.
