Sustainable denim: Hemp and green chemistry leading the way
The global denim market is on track to exceed USD 115 billion by 2029. Yet, its growth is closely linked to cotton—a fiber known for its softness but also for the environmental challenges tied to its conventional cultivation. Cotton farming demands vast amounts of water and pesticides, leading to significant environmental and social impacts. These concerns are increasingly raising doubts about cotton’s long-term sustainability in the denim industry.
Hemp presents a potential solution, offering better climate resilience and requiring fewer resources than cotton. It also helps improve soil health. However, hemp’s adoption in denim has been limited, with hemp content typically not surpassing 20%. This is mainly due to challenges in achieving the desired handfeel and aesthetics that consumers expect from denim. As a result, hemp’s role in mainstream denim has remained restricted, with companies facing a trade-off between performance, price, and sustainability.
To tackle these challenges, Fashion for Good has launched the Beyond50 Denim project, aiming to combine cottonized hemp and green chemistry. The initiative brings together notable brands such as BESTSELLER, C&A, Reformation, PDS Limited, and Target, along with innovators like SEFF and FIBRE52™, and manufacturers such as Bossa (Turkey) and Nice Denim (Bangladesh).
Carrie Freiman Parry, Senior Director of Sustainability at Reformation, expressed the company’s commitment:

Beyond50 Denim is a chance to really put promising solutions like hemp and green chemistry to the test: to learn, validate, and hopefully help open the door for a more sustainable future for denim.
The project focuses on validating two complementary innovations: SEFF’s Nano-Pulse™ technology and FIBRE52™’s green chemistry solution. SEFF’s technology transforms raw hemp into refined, cotton-like fibers, making them easier to spin into fabric. Meanwhile, FIBRE52™’s chemistry can give hemp-based fabrics a softer handfeel, similar to traditional cotton denim.

Hemp’s limited adoption in denim production reveals how entrenched industry practices can systematically prevent transformative innovations from reaching their potential. With Beyond50 Denim, we aim to demonstrate that overcoming these barriers requires more than isolated technological advances. By strategically combining breakthrough fiber technology with green chemistry, the project shows how different innovations can work together to tackle long-standing challenges in the denim industry.
The ultimate goal of the Beyond50 Denim project is to push hemp content in denim beyond 20%, ideally reaching 50% or more, while still maintaining the desired functional and aesthetic properties. This project could set a precedent for the denim industry by showing that hemp is not only a sustainable alternative to cotton but can also meet or exceed the performance and style expectations of today’s consumers.
