Sensil and Roica introduce biomass balanced stretch fabric for low-impact performance apparel

At ISPO Munich, two leading fibre innovators, Sensil by Nilit and Roica by Asahi Kasei unveiled a breakthrough concept fabric designed to reduce the environmental footprint of high-performance apparel. The collaboration brings together Sensil By Nature, a biomass balanced Nylon 6.6 yarn, with Biomass Balanced Roica premium stretch fibre, creating a next-generation material solution that offers sustainability without sacrificing performance or comfort.
Advancing sustainability through biomass balance
Both Nilit and Asahi Kasei apply the Biomass Balance (BMB) approach in their fibre production. This model replaces a portion of conventional fossil-based raw materials with renewable feedstocks derived from reclaimed organic waste. Importantly, these renewable resources do not compete with global food production, addressing one of the major concerns associated with many bio-based alternatives.
Sensil ByNature stands out as the first Nylon 6.6 yarn for apparel produced with biomass balanced renewable inputs sourced from biogenic waste. Roica’s biomass balanced stretch fibre similarly integrates renewable raw materials in place of petroleum-based hydrocarbons, marking a significant step forward in sustainable elastane development. Asahi Kasei will centralize its BMB fibre production through its Taiwan facility, its main hub for premium stretch fibres.
Performance without compromise
One of the most compelling advantages of BMB-based fibres is that they are chemically identical to their traditional equivalents. This ensures that fabrics created using Sensil ByNature and Biomass Balanced Roica maintain the same appearance, elasticity, hand feel, and durability as conventional materials. For brands, this compatibility means more sustainable fabric choices can be integrated without redesigning existing product lines, a major advantage in performance-driven apparel categories.
Verified sustainability through certified systems
To guarantee authenticity and traceability of renewable content, both companies employ rigorous biomass accounting practices and third-party verification. Their production systems are certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus scheme. This certification ensures transparency, strict monitoring, and trustworthy sustainability claims across the entire supply chain.
Measurable impact: lower emissions and reduced fossil dependency
The environmental benefits of this material pairing are significant. According to Nilit, Sensil ByNature can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1.8 kg CO₂-equivalent per tonne of yarn compared to standard nylon production. Asahi Kasei expects additional emission reductions from its Roica Biomass Balanced fibres, with precise figures to be released as production expands.
Together, the two fibres create an advanced, lower-impact stretch fabric solution that can meaningfully improve apparel life cycle assessments, particularly valuable for brands looking to meet stringent sustainability goals without compromising technical performance.
This joint development highlights the growing role of renewable feedstocks and fibre engineering in shaping the future of textile innovation. By combining low-impact nylon and sustainable stretch fibre technologies, Sensil and Roica demonstrate how collaborative approaches can drive meaningful progress toward eco-efficient performance apparel.
