RISE 2025 gathers leaders to advance sustainable nonwoven materials in Raleigh

Industry leaders, researchers, and entrepreneurs met in Raleigh, North Carolina, for the 2025 RISE® (Research, Innovation & Science for Engineered Fabrics) Conference, co-hosted by INDA and The Nonwovens Institute (NWI) at North Carolina State University. Held on October 14–15 at the McKimmon Center, the event focused on new directions in nonwoven science, sustainable materials, and commercial applications.

Kelsun® fiber earns the 2025 RISE Innovation Award

Keel Labs received the 2025 RISE® Innovation Award for Kelsun®, a seaweed-based fiber designed as a sustainable alternative to conventional materials. Free from plastics and trees, Kelsun® delivers softness, moisture absorption, and natural flame resistance without releasing microplastics. It also integrates easily into existing nonwoven manufacturing, offering producers an environmentally responsible fiber option.

Other finalists for the award reflected the same focus on sustainability and real-world problem solving.

  • EsterCycle by EsterCycle, LLC – a chemical recycling process that recovers polyester from biohazard-contaminated PPE and mixed nonwovens, reducing waste and emissions.
  • Fentanyl Detection Wipe by Rockline Industries – a safety wipe that changes color when exposed to fentanyl, providing first responders with a simple tool for on-site drug detection.

Last year’s winner, Hempitecture, was recognized for its PlantPanel™, a bio-based insulation board combining thermal and acoustic performance with low environmental impact.

Discussions on renewable materials and circular design

This year’s sessions covered topics including bio-based feedstocks, renewable carbon, circular economy strategies, green chemistry, and microplastics reduction. The discussions balanced scientific insight with practical policy updates on trade, tariffs, and sustainability regulations.

Two keynote speakers, Dr. Lars Börger of nova-Institute GmbH and Dr. John Warner of The Technology Greenhouse, shared perspectives on material design and the shift toward renewable carbon systems. Dr. Börger explained how molecular-level design choices can promote circularity in production. Dr. Warner discussed how renewable carbon can enhance both innovation and climate goals across the nonwovens sector.

“RISE continues to spotlight the technologies that redefine what’s possible in nonwovens,” said Matt O’Sickey, PhD, INDA’s Director of Education & Technical Affairs. “This year’s conference showed how collaboration and creativity are helping us build a more sustainable industry.”

Graduate research and engagement

More than 20 graduate students presented research posters showcasing new materials and scalable processes. These sessions allowed students to connect directly with companies and investors interested in next-generation textile solutions.

The event also encouraged community engagement through a charity golf tournament supporting student travel grants, tabletop exhibits of new materials, a guided tour of The Nonwovens Institute’s $65 million pilot facilities, and a reception at the McKimmon Center.

Looking ahead to 2026

RISE® will return to Raleigh’s McKimmon Center on August 25–26, 2026. Organizers aim to continue the event’s focus on sustainability, practical innovation, and collaboration between academia and industry in the evolving nonwovens landscape.
