Recycling Europe and several textile industry associations have urged the European Commission to update the EU Textile Labelling Regulation. They say the current rules no longer match the needs of today’s textile industry, especially as the use of recycled fibers and digital technologies continues to grow.
The industry groups are asking for a targeted revision of the regulation to better support recycled materials and align labeling requirements with the EU’s broader sustainability and circular economy goals.
They also support the use of digital labels to provide detailed product information. According to the groups, large and complex physical labels are often ignored by consumers. Research shows that about 70% of consumers remove large garment labels.
Industry stakeholders believe digital labeling can improve transparency, provide easier access to product information, and support the development of a more circular textile industry across Europe. The proposed changes could also help strengthen textile recycling, traceability, and sustainability efforts in the region.
