Toray develops polyester-nylon fiber with at least 93% recycled content

Japanese materials manufacturer Toray Industries has developed a polyester-nylon composite fiber containing at least 93% recycled material by weight, supporting efforts to increase recycled content in premium textiles. The company has also introduced ARTIROSA® CX, a fabric designed for high-end apparel markets, with commercial launch planned for the Autumn/Winter 2027 season.

The development addresses a key challenge for textile manufacturers: increasing the use of recycled materials while maintaining the quality, appearance and performance required for premium applications.

Toray used its proprietary polymer design and composite spinning technologies to incorporate recycled materials into both the polyester and nylon components. The company aims to maintain consistent fiber quality while expanding the use of recycled feedstock.

The 93% recycled content figure applies to the raw fiber, rather than the finished fabric or garment. The actual recycled content of the final product will depend on its overall material composition.

ARTIROSA® CX targets premium apparel

ARTIROSA® CX features a dense, fine texture and a crisp feel. It is intended for men’s and women’s outerwear, urban outdoor clothing and high-end casual wear.

Depending on the fabric construction and finishing process, the material can be developed with functional properties such as water and wind resistance. Toray also stated that the water-repellent agents used for the fabric are not intentionally formulated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

These features are intended to meet the needs of premium apparel manufacturers seeking materials that combine functional performance with a refined appearance.

Commercial plans and further development

Toray plans to verify the technology’s suitability for mass production and explore ways to increase recycled content further. The company will also develop additional fabric options using nylon blends, natural fibers and different finishing techniques.

For ARTIROSA® CX, Toray has set a first-year sales target of 200,000 meters, with commercial availability planned for Autumn/Winter 2027.

The development highlights the potential to expand recycled material use beyond basic textile applications into premium apparel, where durability, appearance and functionality remain essential considerations.
