M&S partners with Circulose to advance circular fashion

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has taken a significant step in its commitment to sustainable fashion by becoming the first UK brand to join Circulose as a Scaling Partner. This partnership is designed to accelerate the integration of circularity into M&S’s fashion supply chain by using CIRCULOSE®, a material made entirely from textile waste.

CIRCULOSE® is produced through an innovative process that transforms discarded textiles—such as production waste or items that can no longer be sold—into a high-performance, reusable material. This helps reduce waste, lower emissions, and lessen the pressure on forests and land, all while reducing the need for virgin fibres.

Katharine Beacham, M&S’s Head of Sustainability and Materials in Fashion, emphasized the importance of this partnership. “Working with Circulose allows us to take circular design from concept to reality,” she said. “It’s a great example of how the industry can move beyond small-scale trials and start incorporating next-generation materials more broadly.”

This partnership aligns with M&S’s broader sustainability efforts, which include its goal of becoming a net-zero business across its entire value chain by 2040. It also ties into M&S’s Another Life initiative, which focuses on reducing waste and promoting reuse through Rewear, Repair, Recycle, and Resale. This includes M&S’s collaborations with eBay for resale and Reskinned for textile recycling, as well as offering repair services through SOJO.

Jonatan Janmark, CEO of Circulose, expressed his excitement about the collaboration. “We’re proud to welcome M&S as our first Scaling Partner in the UK. Their leadership in sustainability plays a crucial role in accelerating the adoption of next-generation materials,” he said. “This is one of many partnerships we’re building with global brands to make circular fashion a reality.”

By using CIRCULOSE® in select products, M&S will not only reduce its reliance on virgin fibres but also make a meaningful contribution to the fashion industry’s shift toward circular design at scale.

Katharine Beacham added, “This is an exciting next step in our journey to become a net-zero business by 2040 and another important example of the ambition behind our Plan A—Another Life initiative.

As M&S continues to explore sustainable solutions and circular fashion practices, this partnership with Circulose is a key milestone in building a more sustainable future for the fashion industry.
