Electronic pattern control enables faster, more flexible warp knitting

Short development cycles, frequent pattern changes, and smaller order volumes have become standard across the global fashion and apparel market. Brands expect fast responses, reliable quality, and efficient production even when batch sizes are limited. For warp knitting producers, this mix of demands calls for machines that can adapt quickly without compromising consistency. KARL MAYER addresses this reality with its HKS warp knitting machines featuring compound needles and electronic guide bar control (EL).
As Michael Ahrendt, Product Owner Global Tricot, puts it:
“The HKS brand made by KARL MAYER stands for the best warp knitting machine in the world, regardless of model and manufacturing location.”
EL pattern drive – proven flexibility over decades
KARL MAYER introduced electronic guide bar control more than 35 years ago. Since then, the EL system has become a key element in flexible warp knitting. It allows unlimited repeat lengths, fast pattern changes, and precise adjustments at the touch of a button. Mechanical pattern chains are no longer needed, which reduces setup time and simplifies daily operation.
Reflecting the central role of this technology, all three- and four-bar HKS machines equipped with electronic guide bar control have carried the “EL” designation since fall 2025. This clear naming also underlines the company’s focus on digitally controlled patterning as a standard rather than an option.
Expanding the platform with ECO models
Building on its established HKS platform, KARL MAYER has expanded the range with two new machines: the HKS 3-M EL ECO and the HKS 4-M EL ECO. Both are designed to make EL technology accessible to a wider range of applications and budgets while maintaining the core strengths associated with the HKS name.
These ECO variants combine proven components with a more cost-conscious configuration. The result is a balance between performance, flexibility, and investment security especially relevant for producers working in competitive markets or serving price-sensitive segments.
HKS 3-M EL ECO – a practical entry into EL technology
The HKS 3-M EL ECO is positioned as an economical alternative to the former HKS 3-M ON, now known as the HKS 3-M EL. As a three-bar midrange machine, it targets high-volume applications where reliable output and fabric quality are essential.
One clear highlight is its working width. As the first three-bar HKS EL machine, it is available in widths of up to 370 inches. This opens opportunities in segments that benefit from wide fabrics and efficient material usage.
Despite its lower investment cost, the machine is based on the same HKS core components used in KARL MAYER’s high-performance models. Operators benefit from familiar handling, stable running behavior, and consistent fabric quality. In daily production, its working speed supports solid profitability. Compared with the premium model, the main difference lies in maximum production speed, which will become more relevant as production volumes increase.
Patterning options remain broad. The HKS 3-M EL ECO Next Generation features EL guide bar control, optional multi-speed operation, and an extended shogging distance from 9 to 34 mm. This range allows larger motifs, coarser structures, and wider repeats. Producers can create more pronounced plissé effects or plush fabrics with longer pile, where greater distances between design elements are required.

Typical target markets include automotive interiors, outerwear, sportswear, upholstery fabrics, velour, coatings, and advertising textiles. The concept has already gained market acceptance, with first machines successfully sold to customers in South America.
HKS 4-M EL ECO – built for constant design change
For applications with frequent style updates and multiple variants, the HKS 4-M EL ECO offers added flexibility. The four-bar configuration supports more complex structures and a wider design range, which is especially relevant for fashion-driven products.
The machine drew strong interest at ITMA ASIA 2025 in Singapore. Visitors responded positively to its combination of efficiency, adaptability, and attractive pricing. One of its main strengths lies in fast reaction to changing demand. Differentiation into several variants can be handled efficiently, reducing downtime between orders.
All four guide bars feature a shogging distance of 2 inches, providing ample freedom for pattern development. EL guide bar control ensures quick adjustments, while optional multi-speed operation allows production parameters to be matched closely to material and design requirements. This setup supports efficient manufacturing of popular items across a wide range of end uses.

Fashion producers, in particular, valued the machine’s ability to respond quickly to new styles and materials. Short lead times and frequent collections are now standard in apparel, and equipment that can keep pace has become a deciding factor in investment decisions.
A clear response to today’s market
Across both ECO models, KARL MAYER follows a consistent approach. Proven technology forms the foundation, while configurations are tailored to specific market needs. Producers gain access to electronic patterning, flexible design options, and stable machine performance without unnecessary complexity.
In a market shaped by speed, variety, and cost pressure, the HKS 3-M EL ECO and HKS 4-M EL ECO provide practical tools for warp knitting companies looking to stay responsive. They reflect KARL MAYER’s long-standing focus on reliability and user-oriented design—qualities that remain essential as fashion and technical textiles continue to evolve.
