According to Aitex, studies suggest that producing just one kilogram of textiles may require between 1.5 and 6.9 kilograms of chemicals. Wet processing operations consume vast volumes of water and generate complex wastewater streams containing dyes, salts, and auxiliary substances that can devastate rivers and aquatic ecosystems when not properly managed.
The environmental burden does not stop at the factory gate. Dyes and finishing chemicals contribute to an estimated 20 percent of global drinking water pollution. Washing synthetic garments alone releases approximately 500,000 tonnes of microfibres into oceans every year. Synthetic textiles account for around 35 percent of primary microplastics entering the environment, and a single load of polyester laundry can shed hundreds of thousands of microscopic fibres that travel through waterways and into food chains worldwide.

What began as an advocacy effort evolved into one of fashion’s most influential sustainability initiatives, the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Foundation.
Established in 2011, ZDHC is a global non-profit dedicated to advancing sustainable chemical management across the textile, apparel, leather, and footwear industries. Its vision is ambitious yet clear: a world where better chemistry protects life, land, air, and water.
How ZDHC Works
Rather than waiting for regulation to impose change, ZDHC promotes a preventive approach. It brings together brands, manufacturers, chemical suppliers, and solution providers to eliminate hazardous chemicals from production processes and accelerate the adoption of safer alternatives.
To support this transition, ZDHC has developed a suite of practical tools. The Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) identifies chemicals banned from intentional use during production. Wastewater Guidelines establish clear standards for discharge quality. Air Emissions Guidelines address atmospheric pollutants associated with manufacturing facilities.
Equally significant is the ZDHC Gateway, a digital platform launched in 2017 that has grown into one of the industry’s largest databases for safer chemistry. With over 125,000 chemical formulations and certification records aligned to ZDHC requirements, the platform enables brands, manufacturers, and suppliers to make more informed decisions about chemical selection and environmental performance.

Initiatives like ZDHC mark a meaningful shift in how fashion is produced and understood. Sustainability in this industry is not limited to recycled fibres or circular take-back schemes. It also means confronting the invisible chemical footprint embedded within every supply chain.
