Fashion brands move to protect Ancient and Endangered Forests

The environmental non-profit Canopy announced that eight fashion and lifestyle companies, Marc O’Polo, Victoria’s Secret & Co., Akyn, Mint Velvet, Spell*, OUTnABOUT, D Ô E N, and ICICLE are taking steps to remove Ancient and Endangered Forests from their paper packaging and man-made cellulosic fibre (MMCF) supply chains. These companies have joined Canopy’s Pack4Good and CanopyStyle initiatives, which signals a growing shift in the industry toward more resilient sourcing and better forest stewardship. They are joined by Next Gen material developers Red Leaf, Zylotex, and Chempolis.

Demand for packaging and MMCF textiles continues to rise worldwide. Over 3.1 billion trees are logged each year for paper packaging alone, and many are taken from the planet’s last remaining old-growth and high-biodiversity forests. Brands entering Canopy’s programs are responding to that pressure by choosing materials that reduce reliance on these ecosystems.

Marc O’Polo CPO Susanne Schwenger said this direction fits the company’s long-held focus on natural materials and lasting design: “At Marc O’Polo, our mission is to become the most sustainable version of ourselves, a journey rooted in our heritage of using natural materials and creating timeless design with lasting quality. Joining CanopyStyle and Pack4Good is an important step in advancing that mission. By working to eliminate Ancient and Endangered Forests from our packaging and textile supply chains and accelerating the shift to Next Gen fibres, we can help safeguard climate-critical forests while building a more resilient, responsible future for fashion. We are proud to collaborate with Canopy to drive meaningful change for people, animals, and the planet.”

Protecting forests remains one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to stabilize the climate and slow biodiversity loss. Many of the brands joining Canopy’s initiatives are exploring materials made from agricultural residues, recycled fibres, and other alternatives that reduce pressure on forests while cutting waste and improving supply stability.

Nicole Rycroft, Founder and Executive Director of Canopy, said the mix of U.S., U.K., German, Chinese, and Australian companies reflects a widening global commitment to responsible sourcing. She noted that their actions will support forest conservation and help grow the market for Next Gen materials.

With the new signatories, CanopyStyle now represents 590 brands with a combined annual revenue above $2 trillion USD. Pack4Good has reached 480 brand partners representing $403 billion USD in revenue.
