CHT advances permanganate-free denim bleaching with organIQ seek

The denim industry has relied on potassium permanganate for decades to create worn and faded looks. It is effective, familiar, and deeply embedded in finishing processes worldwide. At the same time, it is one of the most criticized chemicals in denim production due to health, environmental, and regulatory concerns. Finding a reliable alternative has proven difficult, especially at industrial scale.

CHT Group now reports a significant step forward. New technical findings within its organIQ seek platform confirm that the product can be used effectively as a substitute for potassium permanganate in spray bleaching. The results come after extensive industrial testing and application research, with a strong focus on real production conditions rather than laboratory-only scenarios.

According to CHT’s internal estimates, around 250,000 liters of permanganate solution are used every day in continuous global denim production. Despite brand commitments and growing pressure from European sustainability frameworks, adoption of alternatives has remained slow. Many solutions struggled with uneven color loss, damage to fibers, or corrosion of machinery. Cost and process reliability have also been major barriers.

CHT has been active in sustainable denim chemistry for many years. In 2015, the company introduced organIQ BLEACH T, an ecological alternative to potassium permanganate that delivered strong technical performance. At the time, higher costs limited wider adoption, even though the chemistry itself proved effective.

More than a decade of continued research at LAB102, CHT’s denim innovation hub, has now led to new progress. organIQ seek, already known as a flexible and environmentally considerate bleaching system, has reached a performance level that allows it to replace permanganate in spray bleach applications. Trials show consistent fading results, reliable color removal, and stable processing without the typical drawbacks associated with KMnO₄.

The chemistry performs well not only in spray bleaching but also across other established denim finishing techniques. It remains compatible with water-based bleaching, nebulization or fogging systems, and foam applications. Finishers can also achieve sharp visual contrasts, including classic salt-and-pepper effects, which are often difficult to reproduce with alternative chemistries.

For production teams, this matters. Spray bleaching is one of the most common and technically demanding uses of permanganate. Achieving predictable results without damaging fibers or equipment has been a key challenge for alternatives. CHT’s latest findings suggest that organIQ seek can meet these expectations while reducing environmental and occupational risks.

Thomas Aplas, Head of LAB102, links this development directly to long-term industry needs. “Since the introduction of organIQ BLEACH T, our objective has been to offer ecological solutions that meet the technical realities of industrial denim finishing. The confirmed capabilities of organIQ seek in spray bleach applications represent a meaningful step toward reducing and ultimately replacing permanganate use – both technically and economically. This is an important development for the denim industry in Europe and worldwide,” he says.

The timing is relevant. European regulations are becoming stricter, and brands are under increasing pressure to remove hazardous substances from their supply chains. Initiatives such as the EU Green Deal and the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles are pushing chemical suppliers and manufacturers to rethink established practices. Solutions that align with these frameworks while remaining practical for large-scale production are still limited.

organIQ seek fits into this context as part of an existing platform rather than a standalone experiment. It allows denim laundries and brands to move step by step toward safer chemistry without completely redesigning their processes. Cost considerations, especially for the European market, have also been taken into account during development and testing.

CHT will present organIQ seek as an alternative to potassium permanganate at several upcoming industry events. These include COLOMBIATEX in Medellín, Exintex in Puebla, and the Kingpins Show in Amsterdam. By showcasing the technology in different regions, the company aims to engage directly with manufacturers, brands, and finishers who are facing similar challenges.
