BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology highlights circular fashion dialogue at BTKG expo 2026

BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology took part in Bangladesh International Textile, Knitting and Garment Industry Expo 2026 from 29 April to 2 May, using the platform to bring attention to one of the sector’s most pressing discussions – circular fashion and sustainable production in Bangladesh.
As part of its participation, the university organized a seminar on 30 April at International Convention City Bashundhara titled Circular Fashion in Bangladesh – From Waste Crisis to Competitive Advantage. The session brought together academic leaders and industry stakeholders to discuss how Bangladesh’s textile and apparel sector can respond to growing global pressure for sustainable manufacturing.
The discussion was moderated by Mohammad Imtiaj. The keynote address was delivered by Md. Rayed Barakat, who outlined the global shift toward circular systems and stressed the need for closer collaboration between academia and industry.
A panel discussion followed, led by Prof. Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan, alongside Prof. Dr. Md. Alamgir Hossain, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Jalil, and Sarmily Sarker.

The speakers addressed several key issues shaping Bangladesh’s transition toward circularity. These included policy barriers, the role of universities in preparing future professionals, curriculum updates to reflect sustainability priorities, advances in recycling technologies, and the importance of engaging young people in driving long-term industry change.
A recurring message throughout the seminar was that sustainability is no longer an optional discussion for Bangladesh’s textile sector. As international buyers continue to raise expectations around traceability, waste reduction, and responsible sourcing, participants noted that adopting circular practices could strengthen the country’s competitive position in the global market.

The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment, where participants exchanged views on practical pathways for implementation. The event also reflected BUFT’s broader effort to connect academic research with industry needs as Bangladesh’s apparel sector adapts to changing global standards.
