Northshore Apparel Ghana selects Coats Digital to power Northern Ghana’s regenerative manufacturing hub

Northshore Apparel Ghana Ltd has chosen the full suite of solutions from Coats Digital to build the digital backbone of Northern Ghana’s first regenerative apparel manufacturing hub. The sustainable start-up, backed by the Ghanaian and German governments, will implement GSDCost, FastReactPlan and FastReactFabric as an integrated system across its operations.

The project is being developed on more than 50 acres of reclaimed land that was previously used as a refuse dump. It is designed as a zero-waste manufacturing campus focused on ethical production and operational efficiency. Once operational, the facility will produce a wide range of knitted and woven garments, including T-shirts, polo shirts, fleece hoodies, childrenswear, sportswear, underwear, leggings and trousers.

The development is part of a wider regeneration effort in Northern Ghana. The aim is to create stable jobs in a region facing high unemployment and to reduce internal migration to the south, as well as unsafe migration routes to Europe. By building industrial capacity locally, the project seeks to create long-term opportunities within the community.

Nurideen Mohammed, Co-Founder and CEO of Northshore Apparel Ghana Ltd, said the vision was always larger than building a factory. The goal was to create a manufacturing ecosystem that supports dignity, skills development and long-term prosperity. From the beginning, digital systems were seen as essential. The company wanted tight control over labour costs, fabric usage and delivery performance while moving from reactive production to forward planning. After reviewing several providers, the team selected Coats Digital for its integrated approach and industry expertise.

The campus is expected to support more than 2,000 trained employees at launch in January 2026. Recruitment plans include an additional 1,000 workers by April and up to 7,000 more by the end of the year. A dedicated training academy is already preparing 2,000 employees ahead of opening, with a focus on young people and women.

Working conditions are a key part of the model. Employees will receive fair wages along with free daily meals, on-site medical care, a creche for nursing mothers, prayer rooms and secure changing facilities. The project aims to link operational efficiency with responsible labour practices.

Sustainability measures are built into the design. Anaerobic biodigesters will convert solid waste into energy. Water recycling systems will support irrigation, and on-site solar generation will help reduce reliance on external power sources. The goal is to operate on a zero-waste basis while keeping resource use under close control.

Located within the West African cotton belt, the facility is positioned to support shorter supply chains and improved traceability. This is increasingly important for global fashion brands seeking greater transparency and reliability.

By implementing GSDCost, FastReactPlan and FastReactFabric as one connected platform, Northshore Apparel plans to establish precise garment costing based on international method-time standards. The system will support accurate production planning, better line balancing and more effective handling of short runs and last-minute orders. It will also optimise fabric purchasing and utilisation across seasons and product categories.

The integrated setup is designed to remove data silos and enable real-time decision-making across departments. This should help the company manage margins more carefully while maintaining consistent delivery performance.

Himanshu Mehrotra, Managing Director of Coats Digital, said the project shows how technology, sustainability and social impact can be aligned from the start. Digitisation, he noted, supports efficient supply chains as well as fair work and reduced waste. Diaa Hashem, Sales Manager at Coats Digital, added that the combined use of GSDCost, FastReactPlan and FastReactFabric will connect costing, time management, fabric utilisation and capacity planning within a single system.

For Northshore Apparel, the investment in digital infrastructure is closely tied to its social and environmental goals. By combining local job creation, responsible resource use and integrated production planning, the company aims to build a manufacturing model that supports both community development and global market demands.
