Lenzing AG and Energie AG extend residual-energy partnership through 2040
Lenzing AG and Energie AG Umwelt Service have agreed to continue their long-standing cooperation in Reststoffverwertung Lenzing (RVL) until the end of 2040. The revised framework agreement secures the long-term operation of the facility and provides planning certainty for both partners, while supporting climate protection and a reliable energy supply at the Lenzing industrial site.
RVL is one of Austria’s largest industrial residual-material utilization plants and has been part of Lenzing AG’s energy hub for more than 25 years. With a throughput of around 900 tons per day, the boiler plant processes over 300,000 tons of waste each year, converting it into electricity and steam. This output replaces up to 85 million Nm³ of natural gas annually, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and supporting decarbonization efforts.
“For more than a quarter of a century, RVL has stood for security of supply. We reliably generate energy from residual materials while reducing the use of fossil resources. With the revised framework agreement, we are securing this successful path for the long term,” says Georg Kasperkovitz, Member of the Managing Board of Lenzing AG.
The agreement also sets out a retrofit program planned for 2026/27. The upgrades are intended to increase the availability and reliability of the boiler plant. Clear rules for managing emission-related costs are part of the revised framework, along with full compliance with regulatory requirements. This includes adherence to the updated 2024 Waste Incineration Ordinance, which introduces stricter standards for emissions, monitoring, and the sustainable treatment of residual materials.
“This partnership with one of Upper Austria’s largest industrial companies represents a circular economy in action: reliable energy generation from waste materials, high environmental standards, and robust logistics make an important contribution to the decarbonization of energy supply,” says Alexander Kirchner, Member of the Board of Energie AG. He also highlights the logistics aspect of the cooperation: “The possibility of delivering waste materials by rail also strengthens a climate-friendly logistics concept.”
By extending the partnership, Lenzing AG and Energie AG strengthen industrial value creation in the region and underline their commitment to the Lenzing site. The agreement supports the Lenzing Group’s broader transformation strategy, covering decarbonization, efficiency gains, and circular use of resources, while keeping RVL as a key pillar of the site’s long-term, sustainable development.
