Shawmut Insights™: a new tool for sustainable automotive textiles

As automakers work toward more ambitious sustainability goals, Shawmut Corporation is making significant strides in helping the industry reach its targets. The company has launched Shawmut Insights™, a proprietary system that gives manufacturers a detailed look at the environmental impact of their automotive and industrial textile products.

This new Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) system is among the first to model the environmental effects of products from their raw materials all the way to their end-of-life, across Shawmut’s full range of high-performance textiles, including warp knit headliner composites and laminated fabrics.

Shawmut Insights™ provides designers and engineers with unprecedented access to data on how material choices influence environmental performance. For the first time, every step in the product life cycle—down to the type of fiber or lamination configuration—can be traced and evaluated for its impact on the environment.

Nicholas Hammond, Shawmut’s Product Sustainability and Compliance Manager, explains, “The system was built with flexibility and detail in mind. It allows us to follow material flows throughout the supply chain, helping us understand which parts of the process have the biggest environmental impact.

This level of detail enables automotive manufacturers and suppliers to measure and report Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with greater accuracy, aiding their sustainability efforts and ensuring compliance with evolving environmental regulations.

Adhering to the Highest Standards

Shawmut Insights™ meets international standards, including ISO 14040:2006 and ISO 14044:2006, and aligns with the Product Category Rules (PCR) for Nonwoven Fabrics and Fabrics. The system’s results are transparent, including multiple measurements of Global Warming Potential (GWP), allowing for clear and consistent reporting across all evaluated products.

To ensure credibility, Shawmut’s background model and LCA reports have been reviewed by an independent sustainability consulting firm, further validating the system’s compliance with these rigorous standards.
