BCG and Vestiaire Collective released report on global resale fashion market

There is strong but silent competition going on in today’s fashion world. Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Vestier Collective, the leading global platform for luxury fashion, have revealed strong global trends reshaping the resale market in a 2025 report. Where secondhand fashion and luxury are highlighted as a growing sector and are expected to reach $360 billion by 2030, growing three times faster than the direct market.

A survey of 7,800 Vestier Collective users found that 28% of clothing, 30% of shoes and apparel, and over 40% of handbags are already resold. Digital Product Passport (DPP) or digital product identity system will play an important role in enabling consumers to know the true source, ingredients, and ownership history of a product and in creating trust and transparency in the future. This approach will set a new standard of ‘trustworthiness’ in the second-hand market.

Digital product passports go beyond ticking a compliance checkbox. They are becoming a strategic tool for building trust with customers,” said Catharina Martinez-Pardo , a BCG managing director and partner, and coauthor of the report.

Gen Z is proving that sustainable style means repurposing. According to the report, 32% of Gen Z clothing globally is now secondhand, and handbag resale in the US has increased by 66%. According to experts, the new fashion ecosystem of the next decade is being created by Gen Z, combining sustainability, smart spending, and creative expression.

“Whether it’s finding a fashion item you love at an affordable price or finding truly unique items, resale is now firmly rooted in people’s shopping habits,” said Fanny Moizant, co-founder and president of Vestier Collective.

Nearly 70% of buyers and 67% of sellers believe that DPP is essential for verifying product authenticity and knowing product specifications. “From the beginning, we envisioned the future of fashion as circular,” says Moizant. “At Vestier Collective, we enable brands to design for the long-term, deliver seamless resale experiences, and provide customers with transparency to turn wardrobes into dynamic, valuable assets.

This generation is prioritizing brands that work with transparency, reuse, and responsible fashion. So integrating digital product passports; adopting circular design can create new business opportunities in resale partnerships, authentication technologies and sustainable production models.
