GOTS puts textile processing under a new accountability framework
Global Standards, the organization behind the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), has launched a new standard for responsible textile processing.
Called the Global Responsible Textile Standard (GRTS), the new standard covers a wider range of certified fibers. It applies to fibers certified under third-party standards recognized by Global Standards.
The standard aims to give textile processors a common framework for responsible production. It expands the organization’s work beyond organic textiles.
GRTS builds on Global Standards’ experience with GOTS. Launched in 2006, GOTS is now used by more than 15,000 certified facilities across 87 countries.
The new standard comes as brands and manufacturers face growing pressure to improve sustainability across their supply chains. Many companies now use different types of certified fibers in their products.
For textile manufacturers, the development could create a wider route to demonstrate responsible processing practices. Its impact will depend on how brands, suppliers and certification bodies adopt the new standard.
