CovationBio sharpens focus on next-generation biomaterials

Covation Biomaterials LLC (CovationBio®) has announced the sale of its interest in Primient Covation LLC, known as CovationBio PDO and Primient, the world’s largest producer of 100 percent bio-based 1,3 propanediol (BioPDO). After the transaction, Primient will continue to supply CovationBio with BioPDO under a long-term agreement, ensuring uninterrupted production of partially bio-based Sorona® polymer for apparel and homegoods applications worldwide. The move marks a clear shift in strategy. By stepping away from a mature BioPDO platform, CovationBio is freeing up resources to deepen its investment in emerging biomaterials and prepare for the commercialization of its next major product, bioPTMEG, expected in 2026.
BioPDO has been part of the Sorona® story for more than 25 years. During that time, it has grown into a stable and successful business. According to CEO Steven Ackerman, the decision to exit reflects long-term priorities rather than performance concerns. BioPDO remains an important part of the broader sustainable materials landscape, but CovationBio sees greater opportunity in accelerating the next wave of bio-based solutions.
That next wave is led by bioPTMEG, a second-generation bio-based polyether glycol derived from corn cobs. The feedstock does not compete with primary food sources, a point of growing importance for brands and manufacturers. bioPTMEG is designed as a direct substitute for petroleum-based PTMEG, a material widely used in spandex, polyurethanes, and thermoplastic elastomers.
For downstream partners, compatibility matters as much as sustainability. bioPTMEG is intended to fit into existing production lines without major process changes, reducing barriers for manufacturers looking to increase the share of bio-based inputs. Target applications include athletic and performance apparel, footwear components, industrial elastics, and selected automotive parts and accessories.
Sorona® polymer remains central to CovationBio’s portfolio. First launched commercially in 2000, the polymer contains 37 percent plant-based content and is now used globally across activewear, outerwear, workwear, ready-to-wear, high fashion, carpet, and home textiles. Brands value Sorona® for its combination of softness, stretch, durability, and warm breathability.
Updated life cycle assessment results released in September 2025 underline the environmental profile of Sorona®. Compared with nylon 6 made from non-renewable resources, Sorona® requires 44 percent less energy and results in 170 percent lower greenhouse gas emissions. When compared with fossil-based PET, greenhouse gas emissions are 41 percent lower. Against fossil-based PBT, Sorona® shows a 4 percent reduction in both energy use and emissions.
With continued access to BioPDO secured through a long-term supply agreement, CovationBio can maintain the performance and consistency of Sorona® while redirecting capital and expertise toward newer materials. The sale of its Primient stake signals a tighter focus on scaling bio-based solutions that are easier for manufacturers to adopt and better aligned with evolving sustainability goals across apparel, homegoods, and industrial markets.
