80 years of Mahlo: a legacy of innovation and quality

This year marks a special milestone for Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG in Saal an der Donau, as the company celebrates 80 years of success, growth, and innovation. Since its founding in 1945, Mahlo has evolved from a small workshop into a global leader in measurement and control technology.

The Beginning of the Journey

The story began shortly after World War II when Dr. Heinz Mahlo founded the “Dr. Heinz Mahlo Electromechanical Workshops” in Saal an der Donau. Initially focused on building radio receivers, Dr. Mahlo soon recognized the potential of the textile industry and developed the first measurement systems for fabrics. A key moment came in 1958 when Mahlo patented the first automatic weft straightener, a technology that still serves as the foundation for modern straightening machines.

Expanding Horizons

The success of the initial products laid the groundwork for Mahlo’s continued expansion. Over the years, Mahlo expanded its reach, developing products for the nonwoven, paper, and plastics industries. The company also established a global sales and service network, with subsidiaries in the USA, Italy, Belgium, and China.

From Textiles to Broader Markets

As the global market leader in textile straightening technology, Mahlo has built the broadest range of straightening systems available. CEO Rainer Mestermann, who has led the company since 2011, emphasized that Mahlo has expanded beyond textiles. In the late 2000s, Mahlo introduced the Qualiscan QMS, a quality measurement system that has been highly successful. This new product line allowed Mahlo to diversify and mitigate the impact of market fluctuations in the textile industry. In 2018, the company even built a new production hall to meet the growing demand for this technology.

Navigating Challenges

Despite its strong position in the market, Mahlo faces challenges from global economic changes. With around 80 percent of its sales coming from exports, the company is deeply affected by international market conditions. Geopolitical crises have dampened demand for capital goods, but the company remains confident. Mestermann believes Mahlo will navigate these challenges successfully, noting that the company’s success over eight decades is the result of innovation, reliability, and the dedication of its team.

Commitment to Germany and Future Generations

A key part of Mahlo’s success lies in its commitment to the Saal headquarters, where all systems are developed and built. The company remains dedicated to Germany as a location for development and production. Mahlo also invests in young talent, offering extensive training programs as one of the largest training companies in the Kelheim area.

Ralph Greenwood-Mahlo, grandson of the founder, and his wife Aura continue to lead the company. They aim to preserve the company culture established by Dr. Heinz Mahlo while ensuring innovation and new ideas are welcomed. “We want to continue his spirit of innovation while remaining grounded,” said Ralph.

Sustainable Practices for a Strong Future

As a family-owned business, Mahlo is focused on long-term success rather than short-term gains. This mindset also shapes their approach to sustainability. Mahlo’s systems help manufacturers save raw materials, improve process efficiency, and reduce waste, supporting the company’s commitment to both the environment and future generations.

Ralph Greenwood-Mahlo highlights the importance of continuing Dr. Heinz Mahlo’s legacy of finding the best solutions for customers, with a focus on responsibility and sustainability. “Innovation with responsibility,” he says, “was his core idea, and it remains ours today.
