In a strong signal of growing cooperation between the United States and Africa, the U.S.-Africa Trade Desk (USATD) has announced the export of 300 tons of premium cotton from North Carolina to Mauritius. The deal reflects the U.S. goal of expanding agricultural exports while building reciprocal trade partnerships across the continent.
“This is more than a cotton shipment—it’s a symbol of what’s possible when U.S. farmers, African manufacturers, and trade facilitators work together toward shared prosperity,” said William Fanjoy, Senior Trade Advisor at USATD. He credited the U.S. Commercial Service and the Department of Agriculture for supporting the initiative and aligning it with America’s trade vision.
Supporting Mauritius’s Textile Industry
The ethically sourced cotton will feed into Mauritius’s globally respected textile sector, which is known for its high-quality knitwear and apparel exports. By sourcing directly from U.S. producers, Mauritius not only strengthens the traceability of its supply chain but also creates a reliable channel for American farmers to reach international buyers.
“We’re delighted Mauritius will be importing high-quality cotton from the United States for its vital textile industry,” said U.S. Ambassador to Mauritius Henry Jardine. “Expanding trade increases prosperity for both our countries.”
A Gateway to Africa
Mauritius is recognized as one of Africa’s most open and stable economies, making it a strategic entry point for U.S. agricultural products into the broader African market. The cotton deal reflects a wider push to recalibrate trade relationships with a focus on transparency, capacity building, and shared investment.
Nezihi Aslankeser from Cotton Council International highlighted the wider significance: “This shipment represents a win for American farmers, a win for African industry, and a win for free and fair trade.”
Firemount Textiles Ltd, a leading Mauritian manufacturer, will be the first partner in this initiative. CEO Mr. Soma noted,
“By incorporating premium U.S. grown cotton into our denim jeans, destined for American consumers, we are expanding our global footprint while meeting the high standards expected by the U.S. retail market.”

Building Lasting Partnerships
The U.S.-Africa Trade Desk continues to play a central role in connecting American suppliers with African buyers. Beyond trade deals, it works to strengthen infrastructure and compliance systems that make cross-border commerce more reliable.
This shipment of cotton is a concrete step toward long-term collaboration—benefiting U.S. farmers, African industries, and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic.
