Loop Industries introduces Twist™: A sustainable polyester resin for textile and apparel

Loop Industries, a clean technology company, has launched Twist™, a new branded polyester resin made entirely from textile waste. This high-performance product is designed to help the textile industry transition from traditional, linear models to circular systems, moving away from the use of virgin materials and promoting textile-to-textile recycling.
Twist™ was originally developed as Loop’s fiber-grade PET resin. However, it has now been rebranded to reflect its role in advancing circularity within the textile sector. The product is produced using Loop’s patented depolymerization technology. This process involves breaking down polyester textile waste into its base components DMT and MEG before purifying them to their original purity and polymerizing them into Twist™ resin. The end result is a polyester resin chemically identical to virgin polyester, free from dyes, colorants, contaminants, and blends.
By converting textile waste into high-quality resin, Twist™ helps apparel companies reduce their environmental footprint. In fact, the production of Twist™ saves up to 418,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. When compared to fossil fuel-based resin, this represents a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of up to 81%. These findings were independently validated by Franklin Associates, a division of ERG, through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study.
Twist™ is designed for compatibility with existing manufacturing and spinning infrastructures, ensuring minimal disruption to current production processes. The resin offers high purity, consistent color, and excellent dyeability, improving production efficiency for textile manufacturers.
One of the standout features of Twist™ is its full traceability. The resin is embedded with chemical tracers, allowing brands to track their finished products back to the original waste textile inputs. This transparency builds trust and sets a new standard for sustainability and accountability in the textile industry. With growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products and increasing regulatory pressure, Twist™ offers a transparent solution for brands aiming to meet sustainability targets and address circularity requirements.
The production of Twist™ will be expanded from Loop’s Terrebonne facility to the Infinite Loop™ India facility, strategically located to serve global textile and apparel brands. This expansion will help Loop offer Twist™ at competitive prices while maintaining its high-performance, sustainability, and traceability standards.
Giovanni Catino, Chief Revenue Officer at Loop Industries, emphasized the significance of Twist™ in supporting the shift to a circular textile industry. “Twist™ represents a major step forward in closing the loop for textiles,” said Catino. “It supports the textile industry’s shift toward a circular model and provides a unique product offering, meeting the needs of our customers as we secure agreements for the offtake of our India JV.”
