EURATEX Director General Dirk Vantyghem participated in the Clean Industrial Dialogue on Circularity, where he represented the European textiles and clothing industry. The meeting, co-chaired by EVP Teresa Ribera, EVP Stéphane Séjournéé, and Commissioner Jessika Roswall, brought together senior leaders from various European sectors.
The discussion centered on the Circular Economy Act (CEA) and its role in enhancing the competitiveness of European industries. Vantyghem stressed that while many textile companies are committed to more sustainable and circular production practices, the current market conditions do not offer a strong enough business case to support such investments. He emphasized that the CEA needs to address this gap by stimulating demand for circular textiles, both from consumers and public authorities.
One key point raised was the fragmentation of the Single Market, which poses challenges to the industry’s growth. Vantyghem called for harmonized end-of-waste criteria and a coherent Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) strategy to ensure a more unified approach across Europe. Additionally, the global aspect of the circular economy was highlighted, with a focus on the need for proper enforcement and market surveillance to create a level playing field for businesses operating within the EU.
Closing his remarks, Vantyghem noted that it was encouraging to hear similar concerns from other industrial sectors.
Let’s join forces to ensure the Circular Economy Act will strengthen our competitiveness in these turbulent and uncertain times.
