The Council of Fashion Designers of America Foundation (CFDAF) and the Bezos Earth Fund have launched a new $6.25 million partnership to drive sustainability in fashion.
Called CFDA x BEF: The Next Thread Initiative, the three-year collaboration will support designers, students, and creative projects focused on circularity and low-impact production. It also marks the Bezos Earth Fund’s first formal partnership with a fashion organization.
Through this initiative, emerging American designers who prioritize sustainability in their work will have access to grants ranging from $50,000 to $500,000 under the Independent Designer Awards. Student scholarships of $25,000 to $75,000 will also be available, aimed at easing financial barriers for young talents pursuing environmentally responsible design.
The CFDA plans to host exhibitions and digital storytelling programs to showcase the grantees’ projects and highlight how responsible fashion can succeed commercially.
“This partnership provides designers and students with tangible support to build a more sustainable future for fashion,” said Steven Kolb, president and CEO of the CFDA. He added that the effort extends the CFDA’s long-standing work in sustainability, including initiatives like the Sustainability Resource Hub, which helps brands access tools and information to improve their environmental performance.
Tom Taylor, president and CEO of the Bezos Earth Fund, described the collaboration as part of the Fund’s broader commitment to advancing materials science and supply chain innovation. “Fashion has always been a mirror of culture, and now, it can be a catalyst for change,” he said.
By combining the CFDA’s deep connection to the design community with the Bezos Earth Fund’s focus on environmental progress, The Next Thread Initiative aims to make sustainability an integral part of American fashion’s creative and educational foundation.
